Mountain Bike Maintenance Checklist for Beginners

You don't need a workshop to keep a hardtail happy. Fifteen minutes a month prevents 90% of trailside failures. Here's the checklist we give every new rider.

Before every ride (2 minutes)

  • Tire pressure —硬尾 runs 25–35 psi; heavier riders higher. Squeeze-test or use a gauge.
  • Brakes — squeeze both levers; pads should bite immediately, not pull to the bar.
  • Quick releases / thru-axles — snug, not finger-loose.

Monthly (15 minutes)

  • Chain — wipe, then lube. Wipe excess; a oily chain attracts grit that eats the drivetrain.
  • Bolts — check stem, bar, seatpost to manufacturer torque. A 4/5 mm key covers most.
  • Hardware — inspect for cracks at weld points, especially on dirt jump frames that land hard.
  • Suspension — clean stanchions, check for oil weep.

Every 6 months

  • Replace cable-out brake pads before they're gone.
  • True wheels if they rub the brake.
  • Service suspension per the fork manual.

When to call a pro

Hydraulic brakes, internal routing and suspension rebuilds are worth a shop visit. For everything else, the FOREVER and MEIRX manuals (included with every order) walk you through it.
