Start with a hardtail

For most first-time riders, a hardtail (front suspension, rigid rear) is the smart choice. It's lighter, simpler, cheaper to maintain, and teaches you the fundamentals of line choice and weight shift. Hardtail vs full-suspension

• Hardtail — best value, low maintenance, great for XC, fire roads and flow trails.
• Full-suspension — plusher on rough descents, but heavier and pricier to service. Wait until you know you love the sport.

Wheel size: 27.5" vs 29"

Frame material
